ABWF History

History

A Better Way Foundation has a ten-year history of successful public education, advocacy, and campaign building in the State of Connecticut around progressive social justice initiatives.

Notable victories include the expansion of jail diversion and re-sentencing programs for drug addicted citizens (2000-2002), expanding our public education campaign to include community based organizations and community organizers which resulted in an amplified public education campaign for crack cocaine and powder cocaine equalization and increased access to state and private outpatient drug treatment (2003-2005), equalizing sentencing disparities for crack and powder cocaine, and securing the reallocation of state funding for crack cocaine and methamphetamine acute care (in-patient) services (2005).  In the past four years alone, ABWF secured Racial and Ethnic Impact Statements be attached to any new criminal justice bill; removed obstacles to unemployment for formerly incarcerated individuals through passage of “ban the box” ordinances in three municipalities and state government; decriminalized marijuana; expanded community based drug treatment; and secured “good Samaritan” protection for individuals who report an overdose death.
